A gypsy, also known as a Romani or Romany, is a member of a traditionally itinerant ethnic group originating in Northern India. The term "gypsy" has been used historically as a derogatory term and is now considered offensive by many Romani people. Traditionally, gypsies have lived in caravans or other portable dwellings and have made their living through trades such as fortune-telling, music, and metalworking. Despite being a diverse and widely dispersed ethnic group, Romani people have faced persecution and discrimination throughout history, including the Holocaust during World War II. Today, many Romani people continue to face economic and social marginalization and discrimination in many parts of the world.
